"This is a really challenging time to start a career - do you have any tips for newly graduating students?"
The pandemic has disrupted global economies, and Human Resources has been at the heart of it. With organisations now on the point of recovery, the role of HR is becoming even more important and the pandemic is becoming an accelerator for one of the greatest workplace transformations of our lifetime.
In the earlier phase of the pandemic, there were huge challenges for both employees individually and business’ as a whole - as businesses were laying and paying off their employees simply to survive the pandemic. They had the challenge of keeping companies functioning and economically stable, whilst employees faced the challenge of being compatible and productive in order to keep their jobs.
Although currently in a state of recovery, the challenges are still there. Before hiring an employee, companies now must make sure that the candidate they are seeking is compatible with the employees that they have filtered during the survival period. However, if candidates update themselves to suit the current climate and new hiring criteria, they could find that there are a lot of opportunities available to them in today's job market.
And this also applies to new graduates entering the job market. This is more relevant with regards to digitalization. Nepali companies are now updating themselves and transforming digitally post-pandemic, with most of their employees having to work remotely. So it is important that students are up to date with the latest technology.
“What are the top 5 areas that new graduates focus on in order to improve their chances when applying for their dream jobs?”
There are 5 key things that we always recommend new graduates to focus on when searching for their dream jobs:
- Update your resume and LinkedIn profile:
Create a strong resume that gives a good overall idea about your profile, as it is the first thing that the hiring manager will notice. Also keep your LinkedIn profile updated in order to increase your networking opportunities with various professionals.
- Participate in skill enhancing training:
Build your skillset outside of your degree by participating in various training. This will show employers that you are willing to tailor your skills and increase your chances of getting your dream job by ensuring you have the correct skill set they are looking for when hiring.
- Be flexible and adaptable:
Boost your confidence so that you can respond positively to change and new work techniques. It has been proven that candidates who are prepared to rise to the challenges of dealing with the unfamiliar and are able to cope with the unexpected are valued more.
- Be positive and self-confident:
Take some time every day to remind yourself of all the skills you possess, and all that you can offer your potential employer. It is important to visualise your reflections and review them as needed throughout the week.
- Get in touch with recruiters and consultants:
It is important to have a good support system that will help you to identify your qualities and the areas that you need to improve upon. Being proactive and contacting recruiters and consultants will help you to seek the right job and meet the right people to get it.
