Embarking on an internship abroad is a dream for many students, and for me, it became a reality during my final year of college. The journey was filled with challenges and moments of doubt, but ultimately, it was a transformative experience that I'll cherish forever.

As a graduating student, the prospect of interning at a university in Germany was both exhilarating and daunting. The application process was rigorous, with heavy document requirements, and managing it alongside my final year project was no small feat. However, with the unwavering support of my college and the Student Support Department (SSD), I navigated through the challenges.

My internship was facilitated through the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE). This organisation specialises in arranging internships for students in technical fields worldwide, providing invaluable opportunities for professional growth and cultural exchange.

Before departing for Germany, I had the privilege of attending an award ceremony hosted by the German Ambassador in Nepal, where recipients of DAAD-associated internships and scholarships were honoured. It was a moment of immense pride and honour, foreshadowing the remarkable journey that lay ahead.

Touching down in Germany, I was filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Navigating through the unfamiliar terrain of train travel to reach my internship destination was a nerve-wracking experience - and riding trains for the first time proved to be a challenge. However, amidst the initial intimidation, the breathtaking scenery unfolding outside the train window served as a reminder of the adventure that awaited me.

Looking back on my journey to Germany, I realise it was more than just a professional experience. It was a time of growth, discovery, and overcoming challenges. Despite the obstacles, I pushed forward, and from the daunting task of navigating train travel to the breathtaking moments of scenic beauty, every step of the journey taught me something valuable. My internship wasn't just about gaining technical skills; it was about embracing new opportunities, immersing myself in a different culture, and discovering my own resilience. As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned and the memories cherished from my time in Germany, knowing that this experience has shaped me in ways I never imagined.

As the youngest among PhD students and seasoned professionals, I initially felt like a small fish in a big pond. However, the warmth and support of my colleagues and the IAESTE members made me feel welcomed from the start. Under the guidance of my supervisor, I immersed myself in the vibrant academic environment. I attended presentations, learnt from the prolific minds around me and despite initial uncertainties, gradually found my footing and began to thrive in this new setting.

Along with professional development, I also made a few friends for life that I am still in contact with. A memorable event that stands out for me is the team meet we had in a board game cafe. This was a very memorable time for all the members as the IAESTE Jena team got together, played a lot of board games and had the opportunity to know each other even better and we eventually became good friends.

Weekends were reserved for exploration, whether it was embarking on adventures with my friend Garima or venturing out on solo trips to enchanting destinations like Apolda and Heidelberg. Each journey left an indelible mark on my heart, none more so than the breathtaking beauty of Heidelberg. Additionally, travelling to other European countries broadened my horizons, exposing me to diverse cultures and architectural wonders and making a lot of new friends.

Amidst the cultural immersion, there were moments of exhilarating adventure, such as rafting in one of Jena's longest rivers with friends and visiting the amazing planetarium in Jena. These experiences not only provided a welcome break from routine but also taught me the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges.

When I returned from Germany our graduation ceremony was just around the corner and I am very grateful to proudly say that I won the Student Excellence Award 2023 from my batch. That day I felt like all the hard work and the all-nighter  I had pulled finally paid off. I went from someone struggling to write a single code to become the ‘Student of the Batch’, and the credit, along with my hard work, goes to the amazing teachers at the college who were there to guide me through every step of my journey.

My internship in Germany and academic achievements were more than just achievements, it was a transformative journey of personal growth, cultural immersion, and unforgettable experiences. From navigating the complexities of academia to embracing the wonders of travel, every moment shaped me into the person I am today. To anyone hesitant about chasing their dreams or stepping out of their comfort zone, I offer my own journey as an example. Despite initial doubts and challenges, embracing the unknown led to some of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. So, dare to dream, take that leap of faith, and watch as life unfolds in ways you never thought possible. Let yourself explore your life and meet new people who can have a strong impact on your life and future.
