Do You Need God To Be A Good Person..?
The first time I came to know about God was when my mother taught me to put my hands together and pray in front of our shrine where there were offerings, pictures, and paintings of people that looked almost human but were too ethereal to be.
I grew up to learn that our existence was because of some deities who had immense supernatural power and decided to create a world for men, women, and more. Whereas atheists believe our existence is unprejudiced, and that no such thing as 'God' has played any role in our existence.
Our minds hunger for reason and explanation is very natural. Our tendency to question the understanding behind the tales of the supernatural and logic is a tool we can use to gain that understanding. And when I researched more on this topic I found out that almost every region and every tribe has their own kind of ogd.
Apparently, there are about 8000 to 12000 gods currently being worshipped by humans and numerous religions in every nook and cranny of this very world. It might be considered hard to keep up with so many gods. Furthermore, every religion has its own set of rules that one needs to keep up with to be considered a part of it.
God is seen as this comforting almost parent figure who people worship and almost fear. But wait, did God intend to do that? And who told us that we need to do certain things in order to impress God or be considered good in God's eyes?
The question is: Do you need God to be a well-functioning member of society? And, in my opinion, the answer is no.
No, you don’t need God to have morale. It is so easy to have basic human decency. You don’t need God to accept you, you need to accept yourself, and work on your flaws. And questioning yourself and asking, "Am I a good person?" is the first step to doing so. One doesn’t need to skip meals (fast), offer expensive items to shrines, statues, or paintings - instead just help those who need it the most.
Just because someone is religious it doesn't mean that they're a good person. And likewise, if someone is not religious, it doesn’t mean that they're a bad person. The important thing to do is to work on yourself, your mental health, and your overall wellbeing.
Furthermore, communicating your emotions, being compassionate, having empathy for less fortunate people, being truthful and honest, and respecting each other are not things that are supposed to be taught by some supernatural being. These things are incredibly mundane and can be done with little to no effort.
When that weight of God's validation and judgment is lifted from your shoulders you'll see how ordinary our lives are. Forcing people on God and to be religious is not the saviour people think it is. People fear gods and their curses more than they fear actual laws which constantly baffles me.
I don’t know if there is a god or some divine being up there somewhere, but what I do know is that we should stand for human decency and the brotherhood of mankind, which is the ideological basis of our civilization.
